   brother of Napoléon I
   Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, the son of carlo maria BONAPARTE and MARIA LETIZIA RAMOLINO, and brother of napoléon I, Lucien Bonaparte was extremely intelligent and always possessed an independent spirit. He was a member (1797), and then president, of the Council of Five Hundred and was chiefly responsible for the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire (1799), which brought his brother to power. Minister of the interior (1799) and ambassador to Spain (1800), he became a member of the Tribunate after his return to France. Breaking with Napoléon over the issue of the latter's authoritative exercise of power, Lucien went into exile in Rome (1804), then to Canino, where a principality was created for him by Pope Pius VII. He reconciled with the emperor during the Hundred Days. Lucien had two daughters from his marriage to Christine Boyer (1795). Against the wishes of Napoléon, he married a second time to Alexandrine de Bleschamps, widow of a stockbroker. From that marriage, he had nine children.
